Learn how to create smoother slow motion with Optical Flow and reduce camera shake with Stabilize in VN.

The [Video Quality] tools help improve how motion looks in a clip. Use [Optical Flow] to create smoother slow motion, or use [Stabilize] to reduce unwanted camera shake.

Optical Flow

When normal-speed footage is slowed down, or if the footage is recorded at lower frame rate, there may not be enough original frames to keep the motion smooth. This can make the result look choppy or appear to have a low frame rate. [Optical Flow] analyzes movement between the existing frames and creates intermediate frames, increasing the clip to a selected frame rate up to 60 FPS. These additional frames can make movement look smoother and more natural.

Optical Flow works best when the subject and camera movement are clear. Fast action, heavy motion blur, overlapping subjects, or sudden scene changes may produce visual distortion in some frames.

Note
Optical Flow cannot add frames to footage that is already 60 FPS. For frame interpolation, use footage recorded at a lower frame rate, such as 24 or 30 FPS, then select a higher target frame rate in VN.

  1. Select the video clip on the timeline, then tap [Video Quality] in the editing toolbar.
  2. Select [Optical Flow], choose an output frame rate higher than the clip's original frame rate, then tap the check mark to confirm.
  3. Wait while VN displays [Optical Flow Processing...]. Processing time depends on the clip length, resolution, and device performance.
  4. When [Optical Flow Completed] appears, preview the clip and check that the motion looks smooth.

Stabilize

[Stabilize] analyzes camera movement and adjusts the position of each frame to reduce visible shake. This can make handheld, walking, riding, or other moving-camera footage look steadier.

Note
Stabilization crops part of the frame so VN can counter the camera movement. Check subjects near the edges after processing, especially when the original footage contains strong shake.

  1. Select the shaky video clip on the timeline, then tap [Video Quality] in the editing toolbar.
  2. Select [Stabilize], choose [Minimal cropping], [Recommended], or [Most stable], then tap the check mark to confirm. Stronger stabilization crops more of the frame.
  3. Wait while VN displays [Stabilize Processing...]. Processing time depends on the clip length, resolution, and device performance.
  4. When [Stabilize Completed] appears, preview the result and check that the subject and important details remain inside the cropped frame.

Frame interpolation estimates movement between existing frames. Fast motion, heavy motion blur, overlapping subjects, or sudden scene changes can make that estimate less accurate. Preview the result and adjust the clip speed if necessary.

[Stabilize] needs extra space around the edges so it can reposition the image and counter camera movement. A small crop is therefore expected after stabilization.

[Stabilize] can reduce common handheld shake, but very strong movement, rapid rotation, or heavy motion blur may remain visible. Preview the processed clip to make sure the result and framing work for your video.

Some cameras capture fast movement with rolling-shutter distortion, which can make the image appear to wobble or bend. [Stabilize] may make this jello effect more noticeable and may not be able to fully correct it.

No. [Optical Flow] and [Stabilize] are applied to the clip inside the VN project and do not modify the original video stored on your device.

VN analyzes the clip frame by frame when applying [Optical Flow] or [Stabilize]. Longer clips, higher-resolution footage, and device performance can affect how long processing takes.
